A healthy diet is so important these days, particularly during a period where many of us actually don’t have one. There are plenty of staple items out there that can be adapted to all manner of recipes, all while providing you with all the nutrients you need.
We refer to these as “superfoods” and over the next 12 months, there are some you should certainly be adding to your shopping cart.
They’re so useful for all manner of reasons, from simply getting healthy, to helping with illness and even addiction treatment, with some foods scientifically proven to help ease cravings.
But what are the superfoods you should be adding to your diet?
Avocados
Avocados are already hugely popular throughout the US, especially in the likes of California and Florida, and it’s with good reason. There are plenty of avocado recipes out there, and they all taste fantastic.
The great thing about avocados though is that they’re a fantastic source of monounsaturated fat (the good fat!), vitamin E and they’re a great source of folate.
Berries
Staying mentally strong and energized is mightily important, particularly when you are fighting the likes of addiction, or anxiety and depression, and berries can play a healthy part in that.
The likes of blackberries and strawberries have antioxidants that are low in calories and high in fibre and can help fight off illness, keep you strong and ensure that you’re looking after yourself both mentally and physically.
Tofu
It’s not for everyone, but tofu is such a versatile ingredient that is packed full of goodness. Popular amongst the vegetarian and vegan communities, it’s a great meat substitute and is packed full of protein. It’s another ingredient that is often recommended to people suffering from addiction, as it can reduce cravings. But there’s more to it than that too, while you can also flavour it however you like.
There are so many recipes you can enjoy with tofu, from making curries to thai food, and even pies, replacing a regular steak pie for one packed with tofu and a meaty sauce replacement.
Broccoli
Broccoli is easy to get hold of all year round in the USA and it’s a food that can lower the risk of cancers and other diseases. Similarly, cauliflower, sprouts and other cruciferous vegetables can also have this effect, while also decreasing the chances of a stroke or heart attack. If that’s not reason to get it on your plate, we’re not sure what is.
Seafood
Seafood is another food source that can often split opinion, but it is a huge source of omega-3 fatty acids which are good for your heart. Fish and seafood is heart healthy and omega-3 can also help with mental illness such as helping ease depression. What’s more, it’s easily accessible and there’s nothing better than some fresh fish on a summer’s day.
