A lot of people intend on living a healthy lifestyle. That may be when they have had enough of living a life where their choices were the opposite. However, you may be at the perfect age to start now and stick with plans to exercise and eat well on a regular basis.
This guide will discuss the problem with making unhealthy life choices and how it may affect you later on in life. It’s important that you take a close look at the ‘what ifs’ and what you should do instead of doing something that can harm your body (even if you think it isn’t).
Let’s dive right in and talk more.
Drugs can lead to problems later on
Drug abuse and addiction can have consequences (albeit fatal ones). You may feel like relying on them to have a good time. Or you may find yourself using them as a form of self-medication. Either way, it’s never a good idea to use them. If you need help, our friends at Epiphany Wellness hope you find this information handy. You can talk to them about your options going forward to ensure you beat your drug abuse issue.
Long-term health effects can still occur even after treatment. It may depend on the damage done to your body and how long you’ve been addicted. The sooner you stop, the better things may turn out in your favor.
Alcohol is not the answer either
Like drugs, alcohol can be used to either have a good time or self-medicate from the stresses in life. This should not be the case. It can get to a point where you may rely on alcohol to get you through the day.
Like drug abuse, you can get the help you need with your alcohol issue. You can find the right rehab facility that will put you on a treatment plan. If you want to drink alcohol during a social gathering, that’s one thing.
If that does happen, pace yourself. Don’t get drunk. One may be enough. Otherwise, say no to alcohol. It just might be a plus for your health.
Sitting around without regular movement
It goes without saying that a sedentary lifestyle can hurt you in the long run. That’s why you’ll want to move around as often. Especially if you are working a job that requires you to sit at a desk for long periods of time. For every 60 to 90 minutes, you should take a break and move around. Do stretches, walk around, or do some light exercises. You can do this for about 15 to 20 minutes.
Even better, this will also take your eyes off of the screen for a bit. That way, you won’t have to deal with eye strain. You’ll be doing your body a favor (as well as your eyes).
Sitting around without proper movement can lead to health issues like obesity, cardiovascular disease, and similar issues. We can have our lazy days if we want to. Yet, it never hurts to go outside and take a walk a few times a day. Even if it has to be in the backyard of all places.
Eating a poor diet
Ah yes. It may be hard to resist a Big Mac. Or pounding down a whole lot of Cokes per day. However, your poor diet may lead to health consequences down the road. It would make a lot of sense to take stock into what you’re eating on a regular basis. You may be eating foods that may be surprisingly bad for you. Because it may be high in sugar or even fats. So what do you do? Switch it up, of course.
You can say ‘no’ to the potato chips and switch it out with a thing of fruits or veggies. Instead of going for a combo meal at McDonalds, get a wrap or a salad from Subway. There are plenty of healthier options to choose from, even if you need it on the go.
Foods that are high in fat and cholesterol can lead to heart issues. You could also end up with diabetes if you maintain a poor diet (especially one that is high in sugar). Obesity can happen due to a poor diet, which can lead to plenty of health issues that can even have fatal consequences. Maintaining a good diet should also go hand in hand with exercise. Speaking of which, let’s talk about that now.
Lack of exercise
If you want to keep fit, exercise is key. You may not be moving around as much to live an active lifestyle. You might not even be exercising to keep fit and stay healthy.
Once again, a lack of exercise could lead to health issues such as heart disease and obesity (to name a couple). You may also risk dealing with bone and joint issues. That’s why it is important for the average adult to get at least 150 minutes of exercise per week. That’s 25 minutes per day for six days or 30 minutes for five days. Whatever fits your schedule, block that amount of time and do something. This can be walking, jogging, biking, lifting weights, or anything that is considered to be exercise.
It’s important that you plan out your exercises throughout the week. If you want to be meticulous about it, you can choose a day where you can focus on a certain area of the body. Back on Monday, Shoulders on Tuesday, Abs on Wednesday, and so on.
Of course, if you’re going to plan a leg day, don’t skip it. That may sound like a meme. But hey, there’s nothing wrong with giving your lower body that attention it needs.
Final Thoughts
An unhealthy lifestyle can have its consequences. Especially when you start out early on in life. You’re at a point in your life where you are healthy and still have a lot of time left.
This is your opportunity to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It’s OK to say ‘no’ to what’s not good for you. All you need to do is decide what you choose to eat and what you choose not to put in your body.
