This is it: the ultimate feel-better soup. Whenever I or my husband is home sick I like to make a batch of slow cooker chicken noodle soup to lift our spirits in the morning. It’s amazing how one little dish can go such a long way, and if you are the one under the weather, it is an easy one to make even if you have to do so with a blanket over your shoulders.
This recipe takes longer to cook, but it’s worth the wait. I like dunking a loaf of crusty bread into the onion soup broth or even adding some croutons for extra crunch. What makes this version so special is that you don’t have to continuously stir, like you would if you were to make it on the stovetop. This is an easy way to re-create the classic.
Similar to the Grasshopper Pie, here’s another dessert inspired by a popular mixed drink of the same name. Donato “Duke” Antone, owner of the Los Angeles bar Blackwatch, named the drink after an imaginary surfer character who had a tendency to start bumping into the walls after imbibing several drinks. The Galliano and orange juice carried over from the drink to the cake, and the glaze helps put this cake right over the edge.
Yes, there’s actually tomato soup in these. Canned soups were used in all sorts of recipes as convenient shortcuts in magazine ads in the 1950s, and that included desserts. Think of this as a shortcut to the holiday-favorite spice cake. No one will even know your secret ingredient unless you decide to point it out.
