Health benefits of Longan

Dimocarpus longan, commonly known as the longan (UK: /ˈlɒŋɡən/; US: /ˈlɑːŋɡən/, /ˈlɔːŋɡən/), is a tropical tree that produces edible fruit. It is one of the better-known tropical members of the soapberry family (Sapindaceae), to which the lychee also belongs. This kind of fruit is extremely preferred in China and is also recognized by its regional title pinyin, which suggests ‘dragon eye’ since the place where the pit or even seed is situated looks like an eye. Apart from longan it is also known as Dragon’s eye, Dragon’s eye fruit, Lungan, Cat’s Eye, Eyeball, Mamoncillo Chino. The fruit month are in between mid and also late summer and is also gathered soon after lychee. The longan tree produces fruits in groups, twice yearly i.e. ending of the dry season and throughout late summer time.

The plant is native to southern China, in the provinces of Kwangtung, Kwangsi, Schezwan and Fukien, Hainan, Yunnan and is also known as the lychee’s little brother. The longan is simply a little bigger than an olive and isn’t quite as succulent like a lychee. Branches are pilosulose (covered with long soft hairs), and are scattered with glaucous lenticels (waxy pores).

Leaves

The evergreen, alternate, paripinnate leaves have 4 to 10 opposite leaflets, elliptic, ovate-oblong or lanceolate, blunt-tipped; 4 to 8 in (10-20 cm) long and 1 3/8 to 2 in (3.5-5 cm) wide; leathery, wavy, glossy-green on the upper surface, minutely hairy and grayish-green beneath.

Flower

Flower are pale-yellow, 5- to 6-petalled, hairy-stalked flowers, larger than those of the lychee, are borne in upright terminal panicles, male and female mingled.

Fruit

Fruit hangs in drooping clusters that are circular and about 1.25–3 cm in diameter and are usually yellowish brown or sometimes grayish yellow.  The peel is tan, thin, and leathery with tiny hairs.
