An alkaloid from the bark of an African tree that is thought by some to have aphrodisiac properties.
Yohimbine is an extract from from the bark of Pausinystalia yohimbe tree. Yohimbine is considered the active ingredient of this extract. This chemical has reported functional properties as an alpha-2-antagonist. When alpha-2 receptors are blocked, lipolysis of adipose cells can be stimulated via increased action of catecholamines. Stimulation of lipolysis increases the free fatty acid concentration of the serum, which can shift fuel metabolism from carbohydrate use to fat use, thus sparing carbohydrates.
Yohimbine is a naturally-occurring alkaloid that has the ability to widen the pupil of the eye and enhance blood circulation to the body’s extremities. While it has been utilized in the past for treating impotence due to its aphrodisiac effects, modern medicine often suggests newer and more efficient treatments.
