World Wide Web

A distributed hypertext information system usually associated with the Internet (the Net). The World Wide Web (frequently referred to as “the Web”), is really the first application to run on the Internet which makes the Net’s vast amount of information available to the masses. Prior to the Web, information on the Net was primarily accessed using “telnet” and “ftp”, using command line interfaces that were rarely intuitive and often awkward to use. Users now access the Web using front end software called “Web browsers” such as Netscape and Mosaic. These browsers are of the point-and-click variety, and once installed and working properly, are relatively simple to use.
