In health care, a common usage is exemption of a state from participating in the Medicare program under the prospective payment system (PPS) when the state has presented an alternate method of payment which the government has accepted. Similarly, Oregon has been granted a waiver of compliance with regulations as written so that it may use the Oregon plan. States sometimes grant waivers to hospitals to permit special usage of allied health professionals in order to permit implementation of innovative methods of health care delivery.
