Volkmann’s ischemic contracture

Muscle atrophy in a limb caused by restricted blood flow due to excessive tightness of a splint or bandage is known as ischemic contracture. When a splint or bandage is applied to stabilize a fracture, without proper caution, the affected tissues can react to the injury by swelling. This swelling can obstruct blood circulation in the limb and lead to significant scarring, potentially resulting in permanent disability. It is essential to regularly monitor the area below the splint or bandage to ensure that blood flow is not compromised. If the lower portions become congested or appear bluish, it is advisable to loosen and reapply the splint or bandage.
