A class in which students are not grouped according to grades (1, 2, 3, etc.) but instead by their level of skill or by category (such as all handicapped children requiring special services). Many special education classes are ungraded, as are many adult or continuing education classes. Occasionally, whole schools are run on an ungraded basis, with students being evaluated and frequently reclassified according to their individual progress. In such alternative schools, students often pursue independent study and research on projects and courses all or partly of their own selection. Ungraded schools are also particularly attractive for teaching older students, such as former dropouts, who are trying to make up academic deficiencies, as in so-called remedial, tutoring, or catch-up schools.
