Tumour marker

A compound generated by a tumor can often be identified in the blood. Tests for these markers can aid in both diagnosing and treating tumors. These markers are frequently substances naturally found in the body but are produced in increased quantities when a specific type of tumor exists. For instance, alpha-fetoprotein, commonly produced during a normal pregnancy, is found at higher levels in a certain kind of primary liver cancer.
