A protozoan causing vaginal or other genital infections.
A parasite which infests the vagina and causes an irritating discharge.
A protozoon normally present in the vagina of about 30—40 per cent of women. It sometimes becomes pathogenic and causes inflammation of the genital passages, with vaginal discharge. A man may become infected as a result of sexual intercourse with an infected woman and suffer from a urethral discharge; it may also cause prostatitis. Metronidazole is usually an effective treatment, and to obtain a satisfactory result it may be necessary to treat both partners. An alternative treatment is tinidazole.
A species found in the vagina that produces discharge. T. vaginalis is fairly common in women, especially during pregnancy or following vaginal surgery. It is sometimes found in the male urethra and may be transmitted through sexual intercourse.
A type of Trichomonas that inhabits the vagina, known to cause a whitish discharge known as leucorrhea.
