Traction

The act of pulling.


A procedure that consists of using a pulling force to straighten a broken or deformed limb.


In orthopedics, to place a bone or limb under tension to immobilize the part, align parts in a particular way, or relieve pressure.


The process of putting a limb, bone, or group of muscles under tension by means of weights and pulleys to align or immobilize the part to reduce muscle spasm or to relieve pressure.

It is used to treat muscle injuries such as muscle spasm, some bone fractures, slipped disks, and arthritic conditions.

Considerable force, exerted with weights, ropes, and pulleys, may be necessary to ensure that a broken femur is kept correctly positioned during the early stages of healing.
