A light meal consumed during the middle of the day is commonly referred to as luncheon, or simply lunch. In some cases, the term may also be used to describe a mid-morning coffee break, commonly referred to as “elevenses.”
The Anglo-Indian term for a light mid-day meal that is not used very much today is “tiffin.” Tiffin originally referred to a light meal or snack eaten during the British colonial era in India, particularly during lunchtime. It was often packed in metal containers and carried by workers or students. However, in contemporary usage, the term “tiffin” has become less common and has been replaced by other terms such as “lunch” or “snack.”
