Thyroglobulin

The protein in the thyroid gland which is the precursor for the synthesis of the thyroid hormones. The thyroid-stimulating hormone of the pituitary gland stimulates hydrolysis of thyroglobulin and secretion of the hormones into the bloodstream.


A protein secreted by the thyroid gland. Its measurement is an important part of the follow-up of patients who have been treated for thyroid cancer. It is known as a “tumor marker” because its presence in certain situations may indicate that the cancer has recurred in other parts of the body.
