Tension pneumothorax

A condition that develops when air is continually pumped into the chest cage out-side the lung and is unable to escape is associated with compression of the lung and heart.

A condition of the pneumothorax in which rupture of the pleura forms an opening like a valve, through which air is forced during coughing but cannot escape.

A type of pneumothorax in which air can enter the pleural space but cannot escape via the route of entry. This leads to increased pressure in the pleural space, resulting in lung collapse. The increase in pressure also compresses the heart and vena cavae, which impairs circulation.
