Drugs that contain the crystalline compound, sulfanilamide.
A synthetic drug that inhibits or prevents the production of intestinal bacteria.
Antibiotics used to treat bacterial and some fungal infections. Sulfa drugs are medically known as sulfonamides. Sulfa drugs work by interfering with the metabolism of bacteria and fungi, thereby killing them. Sulfa drugs were considered “wonder drugs” before penicillin w2as discovered, and they are still used today. Because sulfa drugs concentrate in the urine before being excreted, they are often used to treat urinary tract infections. Sulfa drugs are not effective for the treatment of colds, flu, or other viral infections.
A category of chemicals that exhibit bacteriostatic properties, meaning they inhibit the reproduction of microorganisms and enhance the activity of white blood cells in the bloodstream, enabling them to engulf more bacteria than usual. These chemicals are efficacious against a wide range of bacteria. The most commonly used preparations within this category include sulfanilamide, sulfathiazole, sulfadiazine, sulfacetamide, and sulfadimidine. They are also known as sulfonamides.
