A small lens-shaped nucleus in the brain where it is a part of the basal ganglia system, located ventral to the thalamus and dorsal to the substantia nigra. Chronic stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus, called deep brain stimulation (DBS), is used to treat patients with parkinson’s disease.
A collection of gray matter, shaped like a biconvex lens, lying beneath the thalamus and close to the corpus striatum, to which it is connected by nerve tracts. It has connections with the cerebral cortex and several other nuclei nearby.
An elliptical mass of gray matter lying in the ventral thalamus above the cerebral peduncle and rostral to the substantia nigra. It receives fibers from the globus pallidus.
