Subperiosteal implant

An implant placed on the surface of the maxillary or mandibular bone for support and attachment of a prosthesis.

Implant designed to rest on the surface of bone, under the periosteum. It consists of a customized casting, made of a surgical‐grade metal or alloy. Permucosal abutments, posts and intraoral bars are designed for prosthetic retention. Three types may be distinguished. (A) Complete subperiosteal implant, used in a completely edentulous arch. (B) Unilateral subperiosteal implant, located on one side of the posterior mandible or maxilla. (C) Circumferential subperiosteal implant, that bypasses remaining teeth or implants.

A prosthesis for use in edentulous patients who cannot wear dentures (e.g., because of mandibular atrophy). The implant consists of a metal framework that rests on the residual ridge beneath the periosteum but does not penetrate the mandible.
