A dental implant placed on the external surface of the maxillary or mandibular alveolar or basal bone. It is designed to provide support for attachment of a dental prosthesis. The implant is not designed to enter the bone, although there may be retentive screws that do, or, with time, the implant may settle into the supporting bone.
