Strain

Change in dimension of an object when subjected to an external force (stress).

Horticultural term for seed-raised plants exhibiting certain desirable characteristics but which are not stable or predictable enough when propagated to be a cultivar.

“Muscle pull;” a stretch, tear or rip of the muscle or adjacent tissue, such as fascia or muscle tendon.

A strain is an injury to either a muscle or a tendon.

A group or organisms of the same species that possesses distinctive genetic characteristics that set it apart from others within the same species, but which differences are not “severe” enough for it to be considered a different breed or variety (of that species). The basic taxonomic unit of microbiology. Can also be used to designate a population of cells derived from a single cell.

In genetics, a population of animals produced through a prolonged inbreeding program resulting in little genetic variability.

A condition in which a muscle has been stretched or torn by a strong or sudden movement.

A group of microorganisms which are different from others of the same type.

Nervous tension and stress.

The partial tearing of a muscle or tendon.

A modestly pulled or stretched muscle. Strains are usually confined to muscle but may also involve tendons or ligaments. Some muscle fibers may be damaged by a strain. Sudden, strenuous movements, often occurring during sports activities, are most frequently the cause.

Excessive stretching or working of a muscle, resulting in pain and swelling of the muscle.

Stretching or tearing of muscle fibres caused by subjecting them to sudden pulling. Bleeding into the muscle causes pain and swelling and sometimes muscle spasm. Application of ice packs and strapping, coupled with a day or twos rest and analgesics, are usually sufficient to remedy most strains. Sometimes anti-inflammatory drugs or physiotherapy may be required.

A stock, said of bacteria or protozoa from a specific source and maintained in successive cultures or animal inoculation.

Strain is a partial or complete tear of muscle fibers and/or a tendon. Sometimes referred to as a pull, a strain is often a result of a violent contraction of a muscle.

An injury in which a muscle or tendon has been stretched too far or has torn.

An injury caused when a muscle or tendon is overstretched.

Overstretching or tearing of a muscle or tendon, resulting in swelling, discoloration, and pain.

The act of removing solid substances from a liquid by passing it through a filter, such as a sieve or a cloth with a fine weave.

The tearing or elongation of muscle fibers occurs when they are abruptly extended beyond their capacity. This action leads to internal bleeding within the affected muscle region, resulting in sensations of pain, swelling, muscle spasms, and the appearance of bruises.

Potential treatment measures could involve allowing the impacted area to rest (ideally in an elevated position) and utilizing ice packs to alleviate pain and reduce swelling. Additionally, the use of pain-relieving medications and engagement in physiotherapy might be recommended.

Overextending or overworking a body part can lead to conditions like eye strain due to misuse or excessive use. It means to push beyond one’s limits or exert too much effort.

A collection of organisms or plants that share close genetic ties.

In the field of pharmacy, “to filter” means to purify or separate substances.
