Stitch

Pain caused by cramp in the side of the body after running.


A sharp localized pain, commonly in the abdomen, associated with strenuous physical activity (such as running), especially shortly after eating. It is a form of cramp.


A popular name for a sharp pain in the side. It is generally due to cramp following unusually hard exertion, but care must be taken that this trivial condition is not confused with pleurisy or a fractured rib. The word is also used to mean the repair of skin following surgery or any other trauma.


A local, sharp, or spasmodic pain that often occurs in the side or flank of athletes. The following maneuvers may offer relief: bending forward while tightening the abdomen; breathing deeply and exhaling slowly through pursed lips; tightening the belt or pushing one’s fingers into the painful area. It is advisable not to eat for 30 to 90 min before exercising, to warm up before exercising, and to work out at a lower intensity for longer periods.


A brief, unexpected, intense ache in the stomach or flank that arises while engaging in intense or unfamiliar physical activity. Additionally, a stitch is a common term for a suture used to close a wound.


A sudden, intense discomfort that typically occurs in a muscle, often in the diaphragm, following unfamiliar physical activity.


To use thread, catgut, or similar materials to stitch through tissue, as a medical procedure to repair an organ or bring together the edges of a wound.
