Stiff neck

A condition in which moving the neck is painful, usually caused by a strained muscle or by sitting in a cold wind.

Limited mobility of the neck, often because of a simple muscle spasm. A more chronic and serious stiff neck may be caused by osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, or slipped or degenerative disks in the cervical spine. Stiffness upon waking or exposure to extremes of cold can also contribute to a stiff neck. Possible trauma to the neck includes whiplash injuries.

Rigidity of neck resulting from spasm of neck muscles. It is a symptom of many disorders.

A frequent indication, often arising from muscle spasms located at the side or rear of the neck. Typically, it emerges suddenly without any evident cause. It might stem from a neck injury like ligament strain, disc protrusion, or whiplash trauma. An infrequent source of neck stiffness is meningitis.

Gentle stiffness can be alleviated through massage, applying warmth, and using a liniment. However, when stiffness is severe or enduring, seeking medical attention is necessary.
