Spondylitis

Inflammation of vertebrae.

A condition involving inflammation of one or more vertebrae. Spondylitis is another term for the chronic inflammatory disease called ankylosing spondylitis, which affects the vertebral joints of the spine and the joints between the spine and the pelvis, eventually causing them to fuse together.

Inflammation of the synovial joints of the backbone. Ankylosing spondylitis is a rheumatic disease involving the backbone and sacroiliac joints and sometimes also causing arthritis in the shoulder and hip. The resultant pain and stiffness of the backbone are treated by analgesics and regular daily exercises. In severe cases the spine becomes completely rigid, through fusion of its joints, and kyphosis results.

Spondylitis refers to the inflammation occurring in the joints that connect the vertebrae in the spinal column. Common causes include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or ankylosing spondylitis.
