Slit lamp

A piece of equipment which provides a narrow beam of light and is connected to a special microscope, used to examine the eye.


An instrument for eye examination using a high-intensity light source that can be shaped into a slit. The slit lamp is used with a twin-eyepiece microscope to give the eye specialist a close look at the various structures in the eye.

A lit version of a microscope designed for observing the inner components of the front section of the eye is known as a slit-lamp. This instrument can also be employed to examine the retina located at the rear of the eye.
