Shy-Drager syndrome

A degenerative neurological disorder affecting the central nervous system and sympathetic nervous system; characterized by an abrupt decrease in blood pressure when moving from a supine to a sitting position or from a sitting to a standing position.

A progressive disorder of the central and autonomic nervous systems. Shy-Drager syndrome is also known as multiple system atrophy with autonomic failure. Its hallmark symptom is postural hypotension, a condition in which a person experiences a drop in blood pressure upon standing or sitting up. This causes dizziness and blackouts.

An uncommon degenerative ailment with an obscure origin, which gradually impairs the autonomic nervous system. Its onset typically occurs gradually between 60 and 70 years of age, with a higher prevalence in men. The symptoms encompass dizziness and fainting due to postural hypotension, urinary incontinence, impotence, decreased sweat production, and parkinsonism. Over time, this condition results in disability and occasionally premature mortality. While there’s no cure or method to decelerate the degenerative process, various symptoms can be alleviated through pharmaceutical interventions.
