Sex hormone

A substance secreted by the sex glands directly into the bloodstream.

An oestrogen or androgen which promotes the growth of secondary sexual characteristics.

Steroid hormone responsible for sexual development and reproductive function. The main female sex hormones are estrogens and progesterone; the male sex hormones are androgens (including testosterone).

The hormones that influence sexual differentiation and development and enable the reproductive cycles to function properly. Sex hormones are secreted by the ovaries in females and the testicles in males at an early stage of fetal development. They trigger the hypothalamus to secrete the hormones appropriate to the sex of the fetus.

Any steroid hormone, produced mainly by the ovaries or testes, that is responsible for controlling sexual development and reproductive function. Estrogens and progesterone are the female sex hormones; androgens are the male sex hormones.

These control the development of primary and secondary sexual characteristics. They also regulate sex-related functions for example, menstruation and the production of sperm and eggs. The three main types of sex hormones are androgens, or male sex hormones; oestrogens, or female sex hormones; and progesterones, which are involved in pregnancy.

Hormones play a vital role in the development of sexual characteristics and the functioning of the reproductive system.

Hormones that govern the formation of primary and secondary sexual features, as well as manage functions related to sex, such as the menstrual cycle. The three principal categories are androgens, estrogens, and progesterone.
