Sesamoid bone

Any of several small, round or oval bones lying within a tendon, such as me patella (kneecap). The patella is the largest sesamoid bone in the human body.


A small ovoid bone embedded in a tendon that lies over a joint and does not articulate with another bone; for example, the patella.


An oval nodule of bone that lies within a tendon and slides over another bony surface. The patella (kneecap) and certain bones in the hand and foot are sesamoid bones.


Rounded nodules of bone usually embedded in tendon. They are usually a few millimeter in diameter, but some are larger, such as the patella, or knee-cap.


A type of short bone occurring in the hands and feet and embedded in tendons or joint capsules.
