The appellation given by the natives of India to the compact and narrow-necked bivalve mollusk, which is found in copious quantities to the south of Cape Cod. It is highly esteemed for its unique taste and is a popular ingredient in the New England-style clam chowder, as well as the Manhattan clam chowder. In contrast to the soft clam, the quahog inhabits deeper waters and is commonly harvested by raking rather than digging.
