Pseudomembranous inflammation

Inflammation in which a shelf of fibrin and white blood cell debris forms on an epithelial lining, usually as a result of a toxin that necroses tissue. Most often this type of inflammation is seen in colitis caused by Clostridium difficile; in the era before vaccinations against diphtheria, it frequently was found in the oral cavity of individuals infected with that germ.
