Pseudohypertension

The observation of elevated blood pressure when taken by conventional means (i.e., sphygmomanometer), that is in reality not elevated when compared with the actual pressure in the artery when determined by more accurate methods. Accurate blood pressure may be obtained with an intra-arterial catheter. Pseudohypertension usually is found in elderly persons, who may have arterial calcifications that interfere with blood pressure measurements obtained with a cuff.
