Prurigo

Ageneral term used to describe itchy eruptions of the skin.

Any of several itchy skin eruptions in which the characteristic lesion is dome-shaped with a small transient vesicle on top, followed by crusting or lichenification.

An itchy eruption of papules.

Any of a group of skin inflammations characterized by multiple blister-capped papules that are itchy and may become hardened and crusted as a result of repeated scratching. Causes include allergies, drug reactions, and endocrine imbalances. Treatment depends on the cause.

A chronic mild to severe inflammatory skin condition characterized by intense itching. Prurigo consists of very itchy papules (small superficial bumps on the skin) and nodules (solid masses of tissue) on skin areas that are easily reached. The small, dome-shaped bumps are caused by repeated scratching and picking. The lesions may become infected and crust over, and skin can grow thick. Itching can be relieved to some extent by applying cool compresses and prescription topical corticosteroids and by taking over-the-counter or prescription antihistamines. Corticosteroid injections into the bumps and phototherapy (treatment with light) are sometimes successful treatments.

A chronic itchy skin disease of unknown cause. It usually starts in childhood with small pale pimples arising deep in the skin. Prurigo may occur in association with hay fever or asthma or start in warm weather. Treatment is unsatisfactory and relapses are frequent.

A chronic skin disease of unknown etiology, marked by constantly recurring, discrete, pale, deep-seated, intensely itchy papules on extensor surfaces of limbs. Superimposed exanthematous manifestations may mask the true nature. This term is used by dermatologists throughout the world, but it has not received a universally acceptable definition. Treatment is constitutional and local, with antipruritics given locally. Prurigo begins in childhood and may last a lifetime.

Skin becoming thicker and experiencing itchiness as a result of frequent scratching.

A collection of itchy, raised skin eruptions. Some experts view the itching as the main characteristic, with the papules being a response to scratching. On the other hand, some believe that the papules themselves are the primary feature and the cause of the itching. Prurigo, like other conditions involving itching, is frequently complicated by secondary infections from bacteria and the development of eczema due to scratching.
