Protected health information

According to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), information in a health care record that “relates to the past, present, or future physical or mental health or condition of an individual; the provision of health care to an individual; or the past, present, or future payment for the provision of health care to an individual.” PHI, especially the recording and transmission of health information, must be held in strict confidence by health care agencies and professionals.
