Privilege

A special right, benefit, or advantage granted to one person or a group or entity, but not to everyone.

Rights granted by the governing body of the hospital to physicians and other health care professionals, who are members of the medical staff, giving them permission to carry out specified diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within the hospital and, in some cases, to admit patients. Privileges are granted upon recommendation of the medical staff, usually working through its credentials committee, which reviews the person’s credentials and performance in determining the privileges to be recommended. Privileges may be withheld, increased, diminished, or withdrawn by the governing body at its discretion (subject, of course, to due process requirements).
