The presenting part of the fetus.
The way in which a baby will be born, in respect of the part of the baby’s body which will appear first in the vaginal channel.
Position of the fetus in the uterus with reference to the part of the fetus directed toward the birth canal. Normally the head appears first (cephalic presentation), but in some cases the buttocks, feet, shoulder, or side may present first. Abnormal presentations may cause difficulty in childbirth, and attempts to turn the fetus may be made; if normal delivery is deemed hazardous, a Cesarean section is performed.
The part of the infant’s body that appears first at the opening from the neck of the womb during childbirth, as perceived on inserting the finger into the vagina. Normally the head appears first (cephalic presentation). However, the infant’s buttocks, its side (transverse presentation), its feet, or the placenta may be the first parts to appear. These and other abnormal presentations may cause complications during childbirth, and an attempt may be made to correct them.
The appearance in labour of some particular part of the child’s body at the exit from the uterus. This is a cephalic (head) presentation in 96 per cent of cases, but in a certain number the breech (or buttocks) may present, or the face, or foot, or even a part of the trunk in cases of cross-birth.
In obstetrics, the position of the fetus presenting itself to the examining finger in the vagina or rectum (e.g., longitudinal or normal and transverse or pathologic presentation).
The portion of the fetus’s body that enters the birth canal ahead of other body parts.
This term refers to the orientation of the fetus before birth. The presentation is categorized based on the fetal part nearest to the cervix, which will lead during delivery. The usual cephalic presentation involves the head. Variations like the breech presentation (where the buttocks are positioned over the cervix) and the shoulder presentation can pose complications during childbirth (also refer to breech delivery). Additionally, the term “presentation” is employed to describe how an illness or condition becomes apparent.
The part of the unborn fetus that is initially detected during an examination through the uterine opening at the onset of labor. The position of this part in relation to the birth canal dictates the type of presentation.
