Postoperative care

A period during which a person is closely monitored for possible complications following surgery. Immediately following an operation, the person is wheeled from the operating room to the postanesthesia care unit; also called the recovery room. The person is given oxygen, and cardiac and pulse monitors are used so that the nursing staff may observe vital signs. The anesthesiologist and surgeon will tell the recovery room nurses what to watch for in the way of possible complications that may result from the surgical procedure and about any special needs. Blood samples may be obtained, and X rays may be taken. Pain or other prescribed medications may be given to make the person feel more comfortable. When the person becomes awake and alert, he or she is transferred back to his or her hospital room.
