Polyuria

A condition characterized by the passage of large volumes of urine with an increase in urinary frequency.

Excessive urination, which can be induced by lithium carbonate as well as many other medications and clinical conditions.

Excessive formation and discharge of urine.

Excretion of abnormally large amounts of urine.

Excessive excretion of urine.

A condition in which a person passes a large quantity of urine, usually as a result of diabetes insipidus.

Production of large volumes of usually dilute, pale urine; it is often associated with diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus, renal disorder, or the intake of large amounts of fluid.

The passing of an abnormally large volume of urine. Polyuria is associated with a number of diseases or disorders including kidney failure and sickle cell anemia. It is also a sign of excess glucose in the blood in people with diabetes mellitus. Polyuria requires medical attention if it persists over several days and does not have an apparent cause such as an increased intake of fluids or taking certain medications that stimulate thirst or urination.

The production of large volumes of urine, which is dilute and of a pale color. The phenomenon may be due simply to excessive liquid intake or to disease, particularly diabetes meliitus, diabetes insipidus, and kidney disorders.

The production of excessive amounts of urine (1,500 ml or thereabout is the usual daily quantity). It is a symptom of diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus and chronic renal failure.

Excessive secretion and discharge of urine. The urine does not, as a rule, contain abnormal constituents. Several liters in excess of normal may be voided each day. The urine is virtually colorless. Specific gravity is 1.000 to 1.002 (higher in diabetes mellitus). Polyuria occurs in diabetes insipidus; diabetes mellitus; chronic nephritis; nephrosclerosis; hyperthyroidism; following edematous states, especially those induced by heart failure treated with diuretics; and following excessive intake of liquids.

The excretion of an excessive quantity of urine.
