Physical fitness

The ability of the body’s physical parts to function, measured by the level at which these physical parts are capable of functioning.


A physiological state of well-being that provides the foundation for the tasks of daily living, a degree of protection against hypokinetic disease, and a basis for participation in sport.


A set of attributes that persons have or achieve that relates to the ability to perform physical activity. Performance-related components of fitness include agility, balance, coordination, power, and speed. Health-related components of physical fitness include body composition, cardiorespiratory function, flexibility, and muscular strength/endurance.


Cardiopulmonary capacity, flexibility, endurance, and strength at levels that are basic to the health and functioning of the body.

Implied in this is more than lack of illness; it is a positive quality that everyone has to some degree. Physical fitness is minimal in the severely ill and maximal in the highly trained athlete. Persons who maintain a high level of fitness may have increased longevity as compared to those who are sedentary. In addition, the quality of life is enhanced in those who are fit.


Physical fitness is the capacity of the heart, lungs, blood vessels, and muscles to function at optimal efficiency.


The ability of the body to perform daily physical activities without becoming short of breath, sore, or overly tired.

A harmonious fusion of muscular potency, cardiovascular well-being, and bodily suppleness that is commonly associated with consistent physical training and nourishing dietary habits.
