Physical dependence

Physiological adaptation of the body to the presence of a drug. In effect, the body develops a continuing need for the drug. Once such dependence has been established, the body reacts with predictable symptoms when the drug is abruptly with drawn. The nature and severity of withdrawal symptoms depend on the drug being used and the daily dosage level attained.


A state where a person is addicted to a drug such as heroin and suffers physical effects if he or she stops taking the drug.


When the body becomes used to a drug and reacts when there is withdrawal.


A phenomenon that develops during prolonged use of addictive substances, signified by the onset of withdrawal symptoms when the drug is discontinued.


A condition in which the body relies on a given drug in order to function.
