Parathormone

Commonly used as an abbreviation for the parathyroid hormone; correctly a trade name for a pharmaceutical preparation of the hormone.

A hormone released by the parathyroid gland that causes the release of calcium from the bones and causes reabsorption of calcium by the kidneys.

The hormone secreted by the parathyroid glands which regulates the level of calcium in blood plasma.

A hormone synthesized and released by the parathyroid glands located in the thyroid gland. This hormone is involved in the regulation of blood calcium levels through its action to increase the rate of conversion of 25(OH)D3 to la 25(OH)2D3 in kidney tissue, and thus increase the levels of this form of the vitamin in blood. This increases blood levels of calcium. The hormone also increases the extent of osteoclastic and osteocytic osteolysis (bone resorption and remodeling). Parathyroid hormone increases the urinary excretion of phosphate and hydroxyproline-containing peptides, thus reducing urinary calcium excretion.
