The parasympathetic nerves, in conjunction with the sympathetic nerves, constitute the autonomic nervous system. This system conveys nerve signals to tissues other than voluntary muscles. Its operation is not subject to conscious control and it regulates organs like the heart, which continues to beat involuntarily under its influence, independent of the individual’s conscious effort.
