  • Proteinuria

Means the presence of an excess of serum proteins in the urine. The presence of protein in the urine. A condition in which there are proteins in the urine. Presence of abnormally large amounts of protein, chiefly albumin, in the urine; it is usually associated with kidney disorder but can also result from fever or…

  • Proteinase

A protease (enzyme) involved in the hydrolytic breakdown of proteins, usually by splitting them into polypeptide chains. Enzymes that hydrolyse proteins. A proteolytic enzyme; an enzyme that catalyzes the breakdown of native proteins.

  • Protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP)

A group of enzymes that remove phosphate groups from phosphorylated tyrosine residues on proteins.

  • Protein kinase C (PKC)

A family of enzymes involved in controlling the function of other proteins through the phosphorylation of hydroxyl groups of serine and threonine amino acid residues on these proteins. PKC enzymes play important roles in several signal transduction cascades.

  • Prostate cancer

A disease in which cancer develops in the prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system. Symptoms include pain, difficulty in urinating, erectile dysfunction and other symptoms. A malignant tumour of the prostate gland, found especially in men over 55. Cancer of the male prostate gland. Except for skin cancer, cancer of the prostate is…

  • Prostate

A gland that surround the urethra at the bladder in the male. This is a walnut-sized gland that surrounds the beginning of the urethra in men. It secretes the alkaline transport fluid that mixes with sperm from the testes to form semen. The prostate needs adequate anabolic steroid stimulation for its health and growth, especially…

  • Prostanoids

Term used to describe a subclass of eicosanoids (products of COX pathway) consisting of: the prostaglandins (mediators of inflammatory and anaphylactic reactions), the thromboxanes (mediators of vasoconstriction) and the prostacyclins (active in the resolution phase of inflammation.) The name of the end products of the cyclooxygenase pathway of the metabolism of arachidonic acid. These are…

  • Prostaglandin E synthase

An enzyme that in humans is encoded by the glutathione-dependent PTGES gene.

  • Prostaglandin E2 (PEG -2)

One of the prostaglandins, a group of hormone-like substances that participate in a wide range of body functions such as the contraction and relaxation of smooth muscle, the dilation and constriction of blood vessels, control of blood pressure, and modulation of inflammation.

  • Prostacyclin

A prostaglandin that is a metabolite of arachidonic acid, inhibits platelet aggregation, and dilates blood vessels. An anticlotting factor made by blood vessel walls and some other tissues. A prostaglandin produced by the endothelial lining of the blood vessels. It inhibits the aggregation of platelets, and thereby reduces the likelihood of the blood clotting. It…
