  • Metalloproteins

    Proteins containing a metal.

  • Metalloenzyme

An enzyme having a metal (e.g. zinc or copper) as its prosthetic group. An enzyme having a metal ion as its prosthetic group. An enzyme containing a metal (ion) as an integral part of its active structure. An enzyme containing a mineral as an integral part of its structure.

  • Metabolomics

The study of the metabolome. The study of all the metabolic processes of cells and their impact on health and disease.

  • Metabolome

The complement of metabolic reactions and metabolic products of an organism.

  • Metabolic weight

Energy expenditure and basal metabolic rate depend on the amount of metabolically active tissue in the body, rather than total body weight; body weight0 75 is generally used to calculate the weight of active tissue.

  • Metabolic water

Produced in the body by the oxidation of foods; 100 g of fat produces 107.1 g; 100 g of starch 55.1 g; and 100 g of protein 41.3 g of water. Water formed as a result of metabolic reactions.

  • Metabolic equivalent (MET)

Unit of measurement of heat production by the body; 1 MET = 50kcal/hour/m2 body surface area. A unit that represents the metabolic equivalent in multiples of the resting rate of oxygen consumption of any given activity. The standard metabolic equivalent, or MET, level. This unit is used to estimate the amount of oxygen used by…

  • Mesophiles

Pathogenic microorganisms that grow best at temperatures between 25 and 40°C; usually will not grow below 5°C. An organism that grows best in the temperature range of 25°C (77°F) to 40°C (104°F). Organisms preferring moderate temperatures, as some bacteria, which develop best at temperatures between a15° and 43°C.

  • Mesomorph

Description given to a well-covered individual with well-developed muscles. Body type characterized by a solid muscular build. In somatotyping, a mesoderm-muscle-structural-dominant person. The Incredible Hulk syndrome. A somatotype represented by the broad-shouldered, well-muscled person, mesomorphy. Person with well-developed skeletal and muscular structure, intermediate between the ectomorph and endomorph. A body build characterized by predominance of…

  • Menhaden

    Menhaden

Oily fish, Brevoortia patronus, B. tyrannus, from Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic seaboard of the USA, a rich source of fish oils.
