  • Autosomal chromosomes

    Non-sex chromosomes, autosome; autosomal. The 22 pairs of chromosomes that are responsible for characteristics other than determination of sex. Pertaining to chromosomes other than the sex chromosomes X and Y, autosomal chromosomes constitute 22 pairs within human cells, while a single pair is designated for sex determination.  

  • Autosomal

    A condition caused by non-sex chromosomes autosome. Referring to chromosomes other than the sex chromosomes X and Y, autosomes comprise 22 pairs in human cells, alongside one pair of sex chromosomes.  

  • Autosexing

    A method of distinguishing the sex of young chickens by including marker genes into the breeding stock which produce a conspicuous phenotype on the male or female progeny at an early age.  

  • Autonomous professional sphere

    The functioning of one of the four health education specialties; school, community, patient, corporate (industrial), in isolation of each other and separate from the basic, fundamental core of the health education profession. The state of being clear, or realizing and acting on one’s values.  

  • Autonomic hyperactivity

    Physical signs of anxiety including sweating, heart pounding, dry mouth, frequent urination, and diarrhea.    

  • Automatization

    A process whereby skilled activities are subsumed by a higher order organization and are achieved automatically.  

  • Automation

    The use of machines to control machines. Automatically controlled operation of an apparatus or system by mechanical or electronic devices that take the place of human elements of observation, effort, and decision making. The use of clinical laboratory instruments that assay large numbers of samples with minimal human intervention.  

  • Automatic thoughts

    According to Beck, the things people picture or tell themselves as they make their way in life. Spontaneous cognitions that arise automatically in response to specific situations. Cognitive-behavioral therapy aims to question and challenge these automatic thoughts.  

  • Automatic reaction

    An action done without conscious thought. A category of reflexes that includes righting and equilibrium reactions.  

  • Automatic hyperreflex

    An exaggerated response by the autonomic nervous system to the birth process.
