    Thinking poorly of oneself, these people are extremely sensitive to potential rejection and remain aloof from others even though they very much desire affiliation and affection.

    A persistent shrinking from strangers and peers despite a clear desire for affection to the extent that social functioning is impaired.

    An experimental procedure in which a neutral stimulus is paired with a noxious one so that the person learns to avoid the previously neutral stimulus.
