  • Plwa

    An acronym for persons living with AIDS.  

  • Plus face

    A facial expression/gesture characterized by raised eyebrows, raised chin, an firmly set neck that, when displayed to another child, typically signals that the face maker will prevail in the encounter.  

  • Pluralistic ignorance

    A situation in which individuals in a group do not know that there are others in the group who share their feelings.  

  • Plumbism

    Lead poisoning. Consumption of paint chips. If the paint contains lead oxide as the pigment, lead intoxication can develop. This is characterized by anemia, low serum iron and copper values, growth depression, ataxia, kidney damage, coma, convulsions, and death.  

  • Plica

    One of the smooth folds of the synovial membrane of the joint capsule of the knee. A fold of tissue; for example, the plica sublingualis is the mucous fold in the floor of the mouth.  

  • Pleural space

    The potential space existing between the pleural surfaces. Small space between the visceral and parietal layers of the pleura. The potential space between the visceral and parietal pleura.     Paired, closed sacs that invest nearly the whole surface of the lungs.  

  • Plethysmograph

    An instrument used to determine the amount of blood present or passing through an organ.  

  • Plenary

    Complete power or jurisdiction over a designated matter.  

  • Pleiotrophy

    A condition in which more than one trait is influenced by a single gene.
