  • Potential stimulus

The energy present in the environment that would be detected if it came into contact with an appropriate receptor distal stimulus, proximal stimulus; effective stimulus.

  • Potential resting

The difference in electrical charges on the inner and outer surfaces of the cell membrane q.v. when it is not conducting impulses. The outer surface is positive to the inner surface.

  • Potential energy

Energy that is ready to be used. Energy that is stored, but not actively used. It includes, for example, the energy stored in chemical bonds, or in objects based on their position in space. The potential energy of an object is determined by either its positioning within a system or its internal arrangement. This type…

  • Potential action

The difference in electrical charges on the inner and outer surfaces of the cell membrane during impulse conduction. The outer surface is negative to the inner surface.

  • Potential

Untested ability that may be developed through training, practice, or other activity. The innate capacity for accomplishment. In the realm of electricity, when objects with differing electrical potentials are connected, a flow of current occurs between them. If they possess identical electrical potentials, no current flows.

  • Potent

Having the male capability to perform sexual intercourse.

  • Potable water

Water that is fit to drink. Water suitable for drinking. Drinking water should be free of disease-causing organisms and should contain only trace amounts of organic and/or inorganic chemicals.

  • Post vaccinal

Following a vaccination, usually referring to some type of reaction.

  • Postural muscles

The muscles that help to maintain posture.

  • Postulate

A general term describing a statement that is a premise for a line of reasoning. From that statement, one can deduce more specific propositions. A supposition or view, usually self-evident, that is assumed without proof. A statement that is accepted or presumed without concrete evidence.
