  • Pragmatism

    A philosophy, particularly promoted by John Dewey, that focuses on the practical application of knowledge. The belief that the practical application of a principle should be the determining factor in decision making. The belief that the complete significance of an idea is found in its real-world outcomes.  

  • Pragmatics

    The rules for the appropriate and effective use of language. In speech and language pathology, the social or interpersonal context of language (i.e., knowing how to use spoken language appropriately with other speakers).

    The use of one’s knowledge in a particular profession. The practice of medicine is the exercise of one’s knowledge in the promotion of health and treatment of disease.   • Power theory of identification

    The theory that children identify with persons who control rewards and punishments, whether the children receive the rewards or punishments.  

  • Power structure

    A group of people in a community whose power often supersedes that of the authority structure and that usually functions for the satisfaction of its own interests.

    Techniques of parental discipline based on parents’ physical power and control of resources.  

  • Poverty

    A condition in which a person or family has an income below a governmentally determined level. The condition of having an inadequate supply of money, resources, goods, or means of subsistence.
