  • Radioreceptor assay test

A pregnancy test that uses a radioactive substance to determine the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in a serum sample.

  • Radiopaque dye

A dye whose chemical composition absorbs X-rays and allows for an image to be seen on the X-ray film. Chemical that does not permit the passage of X rays; used to outline the interior of certain organs during X- ray and fluoroscopic procedures.

  • Radiopacity

    Preventing the passage of X-rays.

  • Radiologist

A physician specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of disease by means of X-rays or other forms of radioactivity. A doctor who specialises in radiology. Physician who specializes in radiology, administering, supervising, and interpreting X-ray, ultrasound, and other types of imaging studies. A physician who is trained in the use of radiant energy, specifically X…

  • Radioactivity

The property of spontaneously emitting rays or subatomic particles of matter with the release of large amounts of energy. Energy in the form of radiation emitted by a radioactive substance. Emission of radiation (in the form of particles or waves) as a result of the disintegration (decay) of the nuclei of certain naturally occurring radioactive…

  • Radioactive tag

A chemical or drug that bears a radioactive atom (tag) allowing a researcher to follow its behavior in the body. A radioactive isotope that is incorporated into a chemical or organic material to allow its detection in metabolic or chemical processes.

  • Radical mastectomy

The surgical removal of the breast, lymph nodes, and the underlying muscles, mastectomy; modified mastectomy; lumpectomy. A surgical operation to remove a breast and the lymph nodes and muscles associated with it. Treatment of breast cancer in which the breast, involved skin, pectoral muscles, axillary lymph nodes, and subcutaneous fat are removed. The procedure involves…

  • Radical behaviorism

A belief that assumes that behavior can be understood in its entirety in terms of the environment.

  • Radiation sickness

An illness characterized by fatigue, nausea, weight loss, fever, bleeding from the mouth and gums, hair loss, and immune deficiencies, resulting from overexposure to ionizing radiation. Death can result. An illness caused by exposure to radiation from radioactive substances. Abnormal condition caused by exposure to ionizing radiation as, for example, from exposure to nuclear bomb…

  • Radiant energy

Any energy that is radiated from any source, including electromagnetic waves, radio waves, visible light, X-rays, or nuclear radiation. A form of energy transmitted through space. Radio waves, infrared waves, visible rays, ultraviolet waves, x-rays, gamma rays, and cosmic rays are examples of energy in this form. The vitality of electromagnetic radiation encompasses various forms,…
