Mucous colic
An inflammation of the colon, with painful spasms in the muscles of the walls of the colon.

Mucous cell
A cell which contains mucinogen which secretes mucin. A cell that secretes mucus; found in mucus-secreting glands.

Mucormycosis
A disease of the ear and throat caused by the fungus Mucor. A disease caused by a fungus of the genus Mucor, affecting the external ear, skin, and respiratory passages. An invasive and frequently fatal infection with fungi of the family Mucoraceae and the class Zygomycetes.

Mucopus
A mixture of mucus and pus.

Mucopurulent
Consisting of a mixture of mucus and pus. Of a combination of mucus and pus. Mucus with pus, usually indicative of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Mucocutaneous leishmaniasis
A disorder affecting the skin and mucous membrane. A form of cutaneous leishmaniasis, involving principally the nasopharynx and mucocutaneous membranes, found in parts of Central and South America. The causative organism is Leishmania braziliensis transmitted by sandflies, usually of the genus Lutzomyia.

Mucocoele
A condition in which a cavity or organ becomes swollen because there is too much mucus in it. The swelling produced by this condition. An abnormally dilated cavity in the body due to the accumulation of mucus; such a ‘cyst’ may therefore form wherever there is mucous membrane.

Mucociliary transport
The process in which the cilia, the microscopic structures within the nose, move mucus towards the oesophagus, cleansing the nose of dust and bacteria.

Moxybustion
A treatment used in the Far East, where dried herbs are placed on the skin and set on fire.
