  • Base curve

    Back surface curve of a contact lens. If the back surface contains more than one curve, the base curve is that curve which corresponds to the optical zone of the lens.  

  • Axial ametropia

    Ametropia due primarily to variations in the anterior-posterior axis of the globe.  

  • Apical touch

    A condition in which a contact lens bears upon the apical portion of the cornea.  

  • Apical clearance

    A condition in which a contact lens clears the apical portion of the cornea, bearing on the more peripheral portions of the cornea or (in the case of a scleral lens) on the sclera.

  • Adaptive

    Symptoms which occur normally while a patient is becoming adapted to contact lenses; includes photophobia, lacrimation. increased blink rate, a foreign body sensation, etc.  

  • Trade name

    Name used by a company to describe a product or service. The name given to a drug by the pharmaceutical company which is protected by a trademark and used by the company for marketing the drug.   • Tar

    Brown, sticky mass formed when tobacco smoke condenses. Complex oily mixtures derived from coal or wood (pine).
